How it works

Interest on a credit card accrues on the remaining balance each month, then whatever you pay above that interest reduces the principal. The calculator repeats that month by month: it takes your balance and APR, applies one month of interest, subtracts your payment, and moves to the next month until the balance hits zero. That is the same mechanic behind every amortization schedule, just without a fixed loan term forcing the math.

The minimum-payment comparison uses the formula behind most major issuers' minimum-payment box: the greater of $25 or 1% of the balance plus that month's interest. Because that minimum is recalculated every month against a shrinking balance, the required minimum payment also shrinks over time, which is exactly why minimum-only payoff stretches out for years. The Truth in Lending Act's Regulation Z requires every statement to disclose an estimated payoff time at minimum payments for this reason, but the disclosure is usually a single line buried near the payment coupon. If you enter a target payoff date instead of a payment amount, the calculator solves the problem in reverse: it finds the fixed monthly payment that clears the balance by that date, using the same standard amortization formula lenders use for a fixed-term loan.

Putting extra money toward the balance compounds because every dollar of principal you clear early stops accruing interest for every remaining month. On the $6,000-at-24%-APR example above, raising the payment from $250 to $300 a month, $50 more, cuts the payoff from 34 months to 26 months and drops total interest from $2,255.61 to $1,739.24, a savings of over $500 for an 8-month-shorter payoff. A biweekly schedule works the same way through a different mechanism: paying $125 every two weeks instead of $250 once a month adds up to 26 payments a year instead of 12 monthly payments, the equivalent of one extra full payment annually. Should I pay off a credit card or save the money instead?

For most people, paying down a card with a double-digit APR beats saving the same money in an account earning a few percent, since the guaranteed 'return' of not paying that interest almost always outpaces a savings account's yield. The one exception is a fully-matched employer 401(k) contribution or a true emergency fund with zero cash cushion. Cover those first, then direct extra money at the card.

Does this calculator account for new purchases on the card?

No. It assumes no new charges are added while you pay down the existing balance, which is the only way a payoff date is predictable. Adding new purchases resets the math: interest keeps accruing on a bigger balance, and the payoff date shown above no longer applies. Is a balance transfer or a personal loan better than just paying off the card directly?

Both can beat paying a high-APR card down directly if you qualify.
