How it works

Daily interest is the annual rate divided by 365, then multiplied by the balance. In the example above, a 4.5% annual rate divided by 365 days gives a daily rate of about 0.0123%, and 0.0123% of $10,000 is $1.23. Multiply that daily figure by 7 for a week or 30 for a typical month to see the running total.

The part most day-rate calculators leave out is the difference between a stated interest rate and the effective annual yield (APY) once that daily rate compounds. A bank that pays 4.5% and compounds daily doesn't just pay you 4.5% of your starting balance over a year — each day's interest gets added to the balance, so the next day's interest is calculated on a slightly larger number. Compounded daily, a stated 4.5% rate works out to roughly a 4.60% APY, and the CFPB's Regulation DD rule on how APY is calculated is the reason banks are required to disclose the APY separately: it is the number that reflects what you actually earn.

The same daily math applies on the other side of the ledger. A credit card or loan balance that accrues interest daily is charged using the same principal-times-daily-rate formula, which is why a balance that sits unpaid for even a few extra days adds up faster than a monthly-only view suggests.
