How to Make Money With Claude

People make money with Claude by selling client work that Claude helps them finish faster. At ModernWallet, we show the math, which here means working out how many billable hours a Claude plan has to save before it pays for itself. Anthropic assigns you its right, title and interest, if any, in outputs under its consumer terms, which allows commercial work while prohibiting you from reselling the service itself. Freelancers use Claude to draft client documents, analyze data, and write code.

According to the July 2026 Upwork Future Workforce Index, freelancers who perform AI work on the Upwork Marketplace earn 34% more per hour than those who do not use AI. Upwork itself adds that "not all AI work is becoming more valuable."

Ways People Make Money With Claude

Yes, people make money with Claude, and the three routes with evidence behind them are freelance services, software built with Claude Code, and automations for small businesses. Claude Code is included on every paid Claude plan but not on Free. You can sell code, research summaries, marketing copy, and business workflows you generate, provided you do not resell Claude or build a service that competes with it.

For freelance services, Upwork reports that AI-augmented professional services grew 72% in volume, with earnings up 22%.

For software and automations, Fiverr reported that searches for Claude Code specialists rose 938% from November 2025 to April 2026 compared with the prior six months. For broader context on automated systems, read our guide on starting an AI automation agency.

Freelancing With Claude and Platform Fees

Upwork's data shows that AI freelancing pays more for complex work than for simple work. The Upwork Future Workforce Index shows that freelancers performing more complex work with AI saw earnings rise 45% year over year. Simple generative AI and creative production work experienced a 90% increase in contract starts, but per-contract earnings fell 13%. Upwork reads this as a sign that lower-complexity AI execution may become less lucrative as it scales.

Marketplace transaction fees reduce your take-home pay on every invoice. According to the Upwork fee schedule, standard contracts carry a freelancer service fee between 0% and 15%, which is displayed before you submit a proposal. Upwork also charges clients a fee of 3% or 5% on Basic plans, or 8% or 10% on Business Plus. You can calculate your net take-home pay using our Upwork taxes guide.

Selling services on Fiverr involves a different fee structure. Under the Fiverr payment terms, sellers receive 80% of the purchase amount, meaning Fiverr keeps 20% on both gig orders and hourly contracts. Before pricing your services on either platform, run your numbers through our freelance rate calculator to ensure your rates cover platform cuts, software costs, and non-billable administrative hours.

Building and Selling With Claude Code

Claude Code is included in paid Anthropic subscriptions, allowing users to build small tools and automations. Fiverr reported that marketplace searches for vibe coding grew 61% over a six-month period, while searches for Claude Code specialists grew 938%. These figures measure growth in searches on Fiverr rather than spending or freelancer earnings.

While Anthropic assigns its rights in model outputs to users, statutory copyright protection has strict limits. Guidance from the U.S. Copyright Office establishes that material generated purely by artificial intelligence without human creative input is not registrable. The Copyright Office's 2025 report on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence affirmed that prompts alone do not provide sufficient human control under current technology.

The Copyright Office says parts you write, edit or arrange yourself can be protected, decided case by case. When you sell software to a business client, set ownership and use terms in a written contract, because copyright may not cover the AI-generated parts. AI Training Jobs That Prohibit Claude

Some AI-training work pays by the hour but bans using Claude on the job. The Handshake AI Fellowship hires 1099 independent contractors at hourly rates ranging from $30 to $125 to write prompts, evaluate model responses, and correct factual citations.

Handshake AI strictly prohibits contractors from using external AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT while performing task evaluations. Business Insider reported via AOL that contractors on OpenAI projects said Handshake AI suspended accounts and withheld pay over alleged rule violations, with "no appeal process."

Handshake was also named in a federal unpaid wages lawsuit, Boggs v. Stryder Corp., filed under the Fair Labor Standards Act in the Northern District of California in July 2026. Our guide to AI training jobs covers pay and rules on the main platforms, so read each platform's AI-tool policy before you apply.

Claude Plan Costs and Break-Even Math

Choosing the right Claude tier requires comparing subscription costs against the billable hours Claude saves you each month. As of October 2026, Anthropic pricing offers several subscription tiers:

PlanPriceClaude Code IncludedHours It Must Save at $40/Hour
Free$0NoNone
Pro$20/month ($17/month billed annually)Yes30 minutes
Max 5x$100/monthYes2.5 hours
Max 20x$200/monthYes5 hours
Team$25/seat/month ($20 billed annually)Yes37.5 minutes per seat

Anthropic's pricing page lists Max "from $100" a month, and its Max plan help article gives the $100 Max 5x and $200 Max 20x prices for web subscriptions. Developers requiring programmatic connections can review Anthropic's API pricing for pay-as-you-go token rates.

To determine whether a paid plan makes financial sense, use this break-even formula: subscription cost divided by your billable hourly rate equals the minimum hours Claude must save you each month. If you bill $40 per hour and subscribe to Claude Pro at $20 monthly, Claude Pro pays for itself if it saves you 30 minutes of billable labor. If you consider the Max 5x plan at $100 monthly, you need it to save 2.5 billable hours each month at that same $40 rate. If you bill $100 per hour, Max 5x breaks even by saving just one billable hour.

Unsubstantiated AI Income Schemes and FTC Rules

Federal regulators have sued companies that sold AI business schemes with promises of automated income. Under Operation AI Comply, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged multiple operations over allegedly false claims that AI software could generate thousands of dollars in passive monthly revenue. Ascend Ecom agreed to a proposed order with a permanent ban on selling business opportunities and a $25 million judgment, partially suspended, after the FTC alleged it promised consumers "five-figure monthly income by the second year."

The FTC also sued Ecommerce Empire Builders, where a court entered a $9,786,124 judgment, partially suspended. FBA Machine faces a proposed order with a $15.7 million judgment, also partially suspended. Both operations marketed AI-powered online storefronts. In August 2025, the FTC sued Air AI for claiming buyers could earn tens of thousands of dollars in days or months. A proposed settlement announced in March 2026 includes an $18 million judgment, mostly suspended.

Under the FTC's Business Opportunity Rule, sellers making earnings claims must have written substantiation and give buyers an earnings claim statement showing the number and percentage of buyers who reached those earnings. The FTC provides a consumer alert on side hustle scams cautioning workers against opportunities demanding upfront fees or promising large payments for minimal labor. Anthropic offers no consumer revenue-sharing program, and reselling direct chat access violates its service agreement.

Taxes on Freelance Claude Earnings

Money you earn selling work done with Claude is self-employment income. If your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 or more during the calendar year, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires you to file Schedule SE and pay self-employment taxes. The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%, consisting of 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.

According to IRS Topic 554, self-employment tax applies to 92.35% of your net earnings from self-employment, and you can deduct half of your self-employment tax when calculating your adjusted gross income. When operating as an independent contractor, you may need to submit quarterly estimated payments using Form 1040-ES. Review the IRS estimated tax rules to determine whether you meet safe harbor requirements, and use our quarterly estimated tax calculator to plan cash flow.

Software subscriptions like Claude Pro qualify as tax deductions if they satisfy IRS business expense rules by being ordinary and necessary for your trade or business. An expense is ordinary if it is common and accepted in your industry, and necessary if it is helpful and appropriate for your operations. Explore our guide on self-employed tax deductions to ensure your operating write-offs comply with IRS standards.

Frequently asked questions

Are people using Claude to make money?

Yes, people use Claude to earn money by speeding up client work they sell as freelancers, developers, or consultants. Upwork research shows that freelancers who use AI on its platform earn 34% more per hour than those who do not. Claude does not earn money on its own. Users get paid when they deliver finished projects to clients.

Is Claude worth $100 a month?

Claude is worth $100 a month on the Max 5x plan only if it saves you enough billable time to offset the fee. If you bill $50 per hour, the plan pays for itself if it saves you at least two billable hours each month. If Max 5x would save you fewer hours than that, the $20 Pro plan costs less and still includes Claude Code.

Do I own what Claude writes?

Under Anthropic's consumer terms, Anthropic assigns all of its right, title, and interest in outputs to you, provided you comply with its terms. However, the U.S. Copyright Office says purely AI-generated material is not copyrightable. Parts you write, edit or arrange yourself can be protected, decided case by case.

Can I sell code written with Claude Code?

Yes, you can sell software and automation scripts developed with Claude Code to clients. Anthropic's terms do not ban commercial use of outputs, though they prohibit reselling access to Claude itself. Because purely machine-generated code lacks federal copyright protection, protect your deliverables through written client contracts and original architectural logic.

Is Claude Code included in the free plan?

No, Claude Code is not included in Anthropic's free plan. Access to Claude Code requires a paid subscription, starting with Claude Pro at $20 per month or $17 per month billed annually. It is also included in Max, Team, and Enterprise accounts.

How to make $1,000 a day with AI?

There is no verified evidence supporting claims that automated AI systems reliably generate $1,000 a day in hands-free income. The Federal Trade Commission brought major enforcement actions under Operation AI Comply against multiple businesses for marketing deceptive AI passive income schemes. Legitimate AI earnings come from selling specialized freelance skills, software, and consulting.
