Robinhood 24 Hour Trading Hours and Overnight Order Rules
Robinhood lets you trade select stocks 24 hours a day, five days a week, from Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) to Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET. At ModernWallet, every guide we write starts from the rule you will hit first, and overnight that rule is the order type. Trading overnight requires whole-share limit orders on a curated list of securities, meaning you cannot use market orders, stop orders, or fractional shares in the middle of the night.
Overnight trading lets you act on evening earnings reports or overseas news before the 9:30 a.m. ET open. Fewer buyers and sellers trade at night, so the gap between the bid and the ask is wider and your order is less likely to fill.
The 24 Hour Market Session and Daily Timetable
The Robinhood 24 Hour Market operates continuously from Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET until Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET. Each weekday splits into set windows. Robinhood calls 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET the overnight hours; a 24 Hour Market order stays executable after 4:00 a.m., and the standard pre-market session opens at 7:00 a.m. ET.
Regular exchange trading runs during normal market hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, while after-hours trading extends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET. According to Robinhood extended-hours disclosures, an overnight limit order can execute between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. ET on a full trading day, between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET on an exchange half-day, and between 8:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. ET on the evening before a trading day. In March 2022, Robinhood moved its pre-market open to 7:00 a.m. ET from 9:00 a.m. and extended after-hours to 8:00 p.m. ET.
When you build an order, Robinhood requires you to select your target trading session. You can designate your limit order specifically for the regular session, extended hours, or the 24 Hour Market. Time-in-force parameters also apply: Good-for-Day (GFD) orders expire at 8:00 p.m. ET, while Good-'til-Canceled (GTC) orders remain active for up to 90 calendar days. Eligible Securities and Order Restrictions
You cannot trade every ticker in Robinhood 24 hour trading. Robinhood restricts overnight trading to a curated list of hundreds of popular, highly traded individual stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Robinhood's HOOD Summit 2026 announcement describes the list as available "across all account types," though the 24 Hour Market support page does not say which accounts qualify.
Robinhood launched the 24 Hour Market in May 2023 with 43 stocks and ETFs and had 95 by September 2023. By March 2024, customers had traded more than $10 billion overnight. However, strict order rules govern every overnight ticket. Robinhood accepts only whole-share limit orders in the 24 Hour Market. Market orders are not supported outside daytime hours and queue automatically for the following morning, while stop orders will not trigger or fill overnight.
Fractional shares are completely excluded from the 24 Hour Market. While Robinhood permits fractional trading from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET, fractional execution pauses between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. ET and stays unavailable until morning. Equity options are also excluded from overnight equity trading; from October 2026, Robinhood options trading runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. ET. If you trade alternative asset classes, Robinhood weekend investing guidelines clarify that cryptocurrency trades continuously around the clock while futures contracts trade 23 hours a day, five days a week.
Order Routing and Bruce ATS Execution Mechanics
When you submit a 24 Hour Market order between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. ET, Robinhood Securities routes it to what its disclosure calls "24H Market Makers." These market makers can execute your trade as principal or route the shares to an alternative trading system (ATS).
Robinhood's HOOD Summit 2026 post names Bruce ATS as the alternative trading system that powers the 24 Hour Market. Overnight ATSs are not required to display their prices publicly. Robinhood's disclosure says 24 Hour Market orders may not be price protected, so your order can fill at a worse price than another venue shows at the same moment.
To prevent wild price swings from distorting execution, Robinhood applies ATS pricing bands. These bands establish hard boundaries above and below each asset's closing price from the preceding 8:00 p.m. ET close. If market sentiment moves aggressively, an order priced outside these bands cannot execute. Robinhood also notes that unfilled overnight orders may be canceled and re-routed when transitioning across session boundaries, creating brief gaps where your order is temporarily unexecutable while systems re-enter the queue.
Overnight Trading Risks and Price Volatility
Overnight orders carry the risks Robinhood lists for all extended-hours trading. In its extended-hours trading risk disclosures, Robinhood explicitly highlights several primary hazards: lower overall liquidity, elevated volatility, changing prices, unlinked trading venues, breaking news, and wider bid-ask spreads. Between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. ET, fewer buyers and sellers are active, so liquidity is lower than in the day session.
With fewer orders on each side, the bid-ask spread (the gap between what buyers will pay and what sellers will accept) gets wider. Picture a stock whose buyers and sellers sat a penny apart at the 4:00 p.m. close. At 2:00 a.m. ET, the lowest ask on the ATS can sit well above that close. A limit order fills only at your price or better, so if the ask is above your limit, your order waits instead of paying it.
Moreover, Robinhood reserves the right to suspend 24 Hour Market trading at any time without advance warning. If trading stops, an open overnight order may not fill, so check its status when the pre-market session opens at 7:00 a.m. ET. Artificial Intelligence Agents and Overnight Trading
Robinhood's AI agents follow the same overnight order rules you do. At its HOOD Summit in late September 2026, Robinhood launched AI agents that can place trades while you sleep.
An agent cannot skip the whole-share limit order requirement, nor can it bypass the pricing bands enforced by Bruce ATS. Say an agent places a buy order after a company reports earnings at night. If the price moves past the order's limit, the order will not fill. Our guide to Robinhood agentic trading explains how the agents work and place orders.
Agents pay the same wide overnight spread you do. Our explainer on AI stock trading covers how other trading software handles orders.
The Future of 24/7 Stock Trading and Exchange Approvals
Round-the-clock stock market access is expanding across the financial industry. Robinhood stated in late September 2026 that weekend equity trading is coming soon, pending formal regulatory review. If regulators approve it, Robinhood customers could trade stocks on weekends, as they already can with crypto.
Regulators have cleared one exchange to run an overnight session, starting in 2027. On August 7, 2026, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) granted the 24X National Exchange temporary conditional exemptive relief under Release 34-106061. This regulatory relief permits 24X to operate an overnight market session from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, running Sunday through Thursday nights preceding a standard business day. The SEC relief takes effect on January 24, 2027, and extends until the implementation of broader Extended Hours Amendments or July 2, 2027.
Traditional financial institutions have explored similar continuous trading frameworks. According to a July 2025 report from Markets Media, the Nasdaq targeted 24-hour trading capability for the second half of 2026, while the New York Stock Exchange parent company planned a 22-hour weekday session on NYSE Arca pending regulatory clearance. Their status in September 2026 is unverified.
Practical Rules for Trading Overnight
Trading overnight requires tighter risk discipline than managing positions during the normal trading day. If you choose to execute outside standard hours, always anchor your limit price close to recent trading ranges rather than reaching for distant bids. Entering aggressive limit orders into a shallow order book invites poor fills, because the absence of institutional volume leaves pricing vulnerable to momentary imbalances.
Keep your overnight position sizing modest. Trying to execute large block orders during thin overnight hours will often move the ATS price against you or leave your order partially unfilled. Overnight sessions serve best as an occasional risk-management venue to react to breaking geopolitical events or evening earnings reports, rather than a primary environment for active day trading. If you trade often on margin, our guide to the pattern day trader rule explains the 2026 change to day-trading margin rules.
Overnight equity trading is not for long-term buy-and-hold investors, passive indexers, or anyone uncomfortable with wide pricing spreads. If you hold diversified index funds for multi-year horizons, you gain virtually nothing by trading between midnight and dawn. Frequently asked questions
Does Robinhood allow 24 hour trading?
Yes. Robinhood offers 24 hour trading on a curated list of hundreds of stocks and ETFs from Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET through Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET. Overnight trades must be whole-share limit orders, which Robinhood routes to 24H market makers and alternative trading systems.
Is there 24 hour stock trading?
Yes. Robinhood offers 24-hour weekday trading in a curated list of stocks and ETFs, routing overnight orders to market makers and alternative trading systems. The SEC has also granted the 24X National Exchange temporary relief to run an overnight session starting January 24, 2027.
How risky is overnight Robinhood trading?
Overnight trading carries substantial risk due to lower liquidity, wide bid-ask spreads, and elevated price volatility. Because institutional participation is limited at night, prices can swing sharply, orders may not receive price protection, and Robinhood can suspend overnight market access without prior notice.
Can you trade options overnight on Robinhood?
No. Options contracts cannot be traded in the Robinhood 24 Hour Market. From October 2026, Robinhood options trading runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. ET, separate from the 24 Hour Market.
Can you buy fractional shares in the 24 Hour Market?
No. The Robinhood 24 Hour Market supports whole-share orders only. Fractional-share trading is permitted during select daytime extended hours from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET and 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET, but pauses completely during overnight hours.
What time does Robinhood 24 hour trading start?
Robinhood 24 hour trading starts every week on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET and runs continuously until Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET. Each daily overnight cycle specifically operates from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET before the morning pre-market session begins.
Why can't I place an overnight trade on Robinhood?
An order is usually blocked because it breaks one of the 24 Hour Market's specific session rules. Check the clock first: overnight trading runs continuously only from Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET to Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET, with no weekend session. Next, verify the asset and order type against Robinhood's 24 Hour Market guidelines. The overnight window supports whole-share limit orders on a curated list of stocks and ETFs, so options, fractional shares, and unlisted tickers will not route. Finally, Robinhood can suspend overnight market access without notice, and lower liquidity paired with wider spreads means limit orders priced away from the prevailing market often sit unfilled.
