International Net Worth Calculator
Yes, this net worth calculator works in any currency because the math is always the same: add up what you own, then subtract what you owe. Whether you use Canadian dollars, British pounds, Indian rupees, or U.S. dollars, the total means the same thing.
What changes from country to country is the benchmark you compare that total against, since each country's median household wealth comes from its own national survey. Canada's benchmark comes first, followed by where to find the same kind of data for the UK, Australia, India, and several other countries.
How it's calculated
Net worth is assets minus debts everywhere, so the calculator above works the same way in any currency. Add up your cash, investments, retirement savings, and the current value of any property or vehicles. Subtract your mortgage, loans, and any other balance you owe. That formula holds in every country. The comparison benchmark does not: every country runs its own wealth survey, on its own schedule, with its own definition of what counts as an asset.
Canada has the most detailed of these benchmarks. Statistics Canada's 2023 Survey of Financial Security put the median net worth of Canadian families at CA$519,700, and that number breaks down sharply by household type. Families with a major income earner aged 65 or older had a median net worth of CA$1,109,700, while couples with children under 18 sat at CA$645,900 and one-parent families at CA$211,200. Homeownership and pension coverage widen the gap further: among families whose main earner was 55 to 64, those who owned their home and had an employer pension had a median net worth of CA$1.4 million, versus CA$11,900 for renters with no employer pension in the same age group. Location matters too. British Columbia led all provinces at CA$773,500, Ontario followed at CA$665,600, and New Brunswick came in lowest at CA$286,200.
Four other countries publish comparable national benchmarks. The UK's Office for National Statistics puts median household wealth at £293,700 for the April 2020 to March 2022 survey period, with the wealthiest 10% of households holding £1,200,500 or more. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a median household net worth of AU$579,200 for 2019-20. Stats NZ measured median household net worth at NZ$529,000 for the year ended June 2024, up from NZ$399,000 three years earlier. Ireland's Central Statistics Office found in its 2023 Household Finance and Consumption Survey that the wealthiest 10% of Irish households held net wealth of €1,024,000 or more, while the bottom 10% held €2,400 or less.
Several other countries turn up in real search demand for this calculator, and each runs its own survey rather than sharing one. India's household wealth data comes from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's All India Debt and Investment Survey, run roughly once a decade. The ministry has never published an official net worth percentile table, so treat any specific figure you see elsewhere with caution. Germany's Deutsche Bundesbank runs a household-wealth study called the Panel on Household Finances. Singapore's Department of Statistics, Malaysia's Department of Statistics, Kenya's National Bureau of Statistics, Statistics South Africa, and the Philippine Statistics Authority are each the right place to check for a current wealth or income survey in those countries. None of these figures convert cleanly to a single benchmark, since survey years, currencies, and what counts as a household asset differ from one report to the next. Enter your own numbers above, and compare them against your own country's official survey rather than a figure copied from a different country's report.
A worked example
Take a 45-year-old household in Ontario with CA$40,000 in cash, CA$90,000 in a taxable investment account, CA$180,000 in retirement savings, a CA$650,000 home, and a CA$25,000 vehicle. Assets total CA$985,000.
The household carries a CA$400,000 mortgage, a CA$20,000 line of credit, and CA$8,000 in credit card debt, for CA$428,000 in total liabilities. Net worth comes out to CA$557,000.
Statistics Canada's 2023 Survey of Financial Security put the Ontario median family net worth at CA$665,600, so this household sits about CA$108,600 below the typical family in its own province. Run the same household's numbers in U.S. dollars, euros, or rupees instead, and the CA$557,000 figure becomes whatever the entered currency shows.
Only the benchmark you check it against needs to change with the country.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing your number to the U.S. median instead of your own country's benchmark. A CA$519,700 median in Canada and a $192,700 median in the U.S. come from two different populations, currencies, and survey years.
- Converting a foreign benchmark into U.S. dollars at today's exchange rate and treating the result as a fair comparison. Exchange rates move week to week, and a benchmark set a year or two ago in a different currency won't line up cleanly even after conversion.
- Assuming every country measures net worth exactly like the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances does. Some national surveys value home equity differently, some exclude pensions entirely, and some run every few years instead of every three.
- Ignoring the local cost of living. A CA$300,000 net worth goes further in a lower-cost Canadian province than the same amount does in Toronto or Vancouver, the same way $300,000 stretches further in Ohio than in California.
- Citing an old survey year as if it were current. Statistics Canada, the UK's Office for National Statistics, and similar agencies release these figures every few years rather than every year, so check the publication date before repeating a number.
Frequently asked questions
Does the net worth calculator work outside the United States?
Yes. The calculator above only adds and subtracts the numbers you enter, so it works in any currency without a conversion step or a country setting. Enter your figures in Canadian dollars, pounds, euros, rupees, or any other currency, and the total, assets minus debts, comes out in that same currency. The calculator doesn't convert currencies or apply a country-specific benchmark automatically. Compare your result to your own country's official wealth survey instead of a U.S. benchmark.
What is a good net worth in Canada?
Statistics Canada's 2023 Survey of Financial Security puts the median net worth of Canadian families at CA$519,700, so that figure is the standard benchmark for a typical Canadian household. The number varies sharply by age and homeownership: families with a major earner 65 or older had a median of CA$1,109,700, while one-parent families had CA$211,200. Homeownership widens the gap further. Families aged 55 to 64 who owned a home and had an employer pension had a median net worth of CA$1.4 million, compared with CA$11,900 for renters without an employer pension in the same age group. Province matters too, with British Columbia's CA$773,500 median well above New Brunswick's CA$286,200.
What is the median net worth in the UK?
The UK's Office for National Statistics reported median household total wealth of £293,700 for the April 2020 to March 2022 survey period, the most recent full Wealth and Assets Survey cycle. The wealthiest 10% of households held £1,200,500 or more, while the least wealthy 10% held £16,500 or less. Property makes up the largest share of that wealth at 40%, followed by private pensions at 35%, with financial assets and physical possessions making up the rest.
What is the median net worth in Australia?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a median household net worth of AU$579,200 for the 2019-20 Survey of Income and Housing, the most recent full release. Average net worth was much higher, at AU$1.04 million, because a small share of very wealthy households pulls the average up, the same pattern the Federal Reserve sees in its own Survey of Consumer Finances. The lowest fifth of households by net worth averaged AU$35,100, versus AU$3.27 million for the wealthiest fifth.
Does this calculator have a New Zealand or Ireland benchmark?
Not built into the calculator, but both countries publish their own. Stats NZ reported median household net worth of NZ$529,000 for the year ended June 2024, up from NZ$399,000 three years earlier. Ireland's Central Statistics Office found in its 2023 Household Finance and Consumption Survey that the wealthiest 10% of Irish households held net wealth of €1,024,000 or more, while the bottom 10% held €2,400 or less. Enter your own figures above and compare them to whichever of these two you match.
Is there an official net worth benchmark for India?
Not a clean one. India's household wealth data comes from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's All India Debt and Investment Survey, run roughly once a decade, most recently in 2019. That survey reports average household assets and debt by rural and urban area. It does not publish a net worth percentile table the way the Federal Reserve or Statistics Canada do. Treat any specific India net worth figure you see elsewhere with caution, and check the ministry's own releases for the numbers it actually publishes.
Which country's statistics office should I check for a benchmark not covered here?
Check that country's own national statistics office rather than a converted foreign figure. Singapore's Department of Statistics, Malaysia's Department of Statistics, Kenya's National Bureau of Statistics, Statistics South Africa, and the Philippine Statistics Authority each publish income and wealth data for their own country. Germany's Deutsche Bundesbank runs a similar study called the Panel on Household Finances. None of these figures convert cleanly to a single global benchmark, since survey years, currencies, and what counts as a household asset differ from one country's report to the next.
