How to Make Money With AI

AI can make you money, mostly as paid work where you sell your own labor or technical skill. At ModernWallet, we show the math, so every pay figure below comes with its source and the condition attached.

According to a 2025 survey by Bankrate, the median side hustler earns $200 a month. The methods with published pay rates are active work: AI-training contracts, freelancing, and building automations for clients. Passive AI storefront schemes have repeatedly resulted in regulatory crackdowns and steep consumer losses.

AI Money Methods Ranked by Published Pay

Making money with AI primarily comes from selling specialized labor to platforms or clients. Data annotation platforms offer published hourly rates. Traditional freelance marketplaces show higher earnings for complex technical implementation. Content and digital product creation take far longer to return revenue and face strict platform rules.

AI Training and Data-Annotation Contract Work

Data annotation platforms pay human contractors to benchmark large language models. Typical tasks include comparing model answers, flagging factual errors, testing output images, writing adversarial prompts, and verifying code logic. If you are comparing platforms, read our DataAnnotation vs Outlier comparison.

Pay rates vary by skill requirements across several active platforms: - DataAnnotation states that general projects start at $25 to $50+ per hour. Coding projects list pay from $40 to $150+ per hour. Specialized STEM projects list $40 to $125+ per hour for holders of advanced degrees or extensive experience. DataAnnotation's FAQ gives different figures elsewhere: general work starting at $25 to $30+ and coding from $50 to $100. Payouts transfer via PayPal. - Mindrift, operated by Toloka, lists entry-level pay of $15 to $30 per hour. Domain expert tiers list $60 to $100+ per hour, with task earnings shown before starting. Payouts process twice monthly through Payoneer or Tipalti. - Alignerr, powered by Labelbox, features an average pay figure of $80 per hour on its homepage. Listed roles range from $30 to $35 per hour for language experts to $40 to $120 per hour for technical specialties. - The Handshake AI Fellowship lists hourly rates of $30 to $125 for independent contractors with graduate degrees. Payouts route through Stripe. - Prolific enforces an absolute minimum floor of $8 per hour for study participants.

Review our guides on AI training jobs, is DataAnnotation legit, and is Outlier AI legit. Starter assessments take one to two hours without pay guarantees. Platforms provide no guaranteed minimum volume, and contractor dashboards can empty unexpectedly.

Freelancing With AI Tools

Freelancing with AI pays more per hour on Upwork, but the premium depends on how complex the work is. The Upwork Future Workforce Index 2026 revealed that freelancers who do AI work on the Upwork marketplace earn 34% more per hour than non-AI peers.

Contract starts for generative AI and creative production work grew 90% year over year, but per-contract earnings fell 13%. In contrast, freelancers doing more complex work with AI saw earnings rise 45% year over year.

Upwork's In-Demand Skills 2026 report, which measures freelancer earnings on completed jobs, found that skills referencing AI grew 109% year over year. AI video generation surged 329%, AI integration gained 178%, and AI data annotation grew 154%. Fiverr reported that searches for Claude Code specialists rose 938% from November 2025 to April 2026 compared with the prior six months, and searches for n8n AI automation rose 125%. Those figures count searches, not earnings.

Take marketplace fees into account before pricing your services. Check our freelance rate calculator to determine your baseline quote. Upwork charges a 0% to 15% freelancer service fee on standard contracts, plus paid Connects. Fiverr keeps 20% of each purchase amount.

Selling Automations to Businesses

Selling automations means charging a small business to build workflows that pass data between its software tools. For an in-depth breakdown of this model, consult our guide to building an AI automation agency.

Software expenses impact agency margins directly: - n8n offers a free, self-hosted Community Edition under a Sustainable Use License. n8n's license FAQ allows charging clients for workflow setup and consulting, but bars hosting n8n as a service for clients or white-labeling it. n8n Cloud starts at €20 a month billed annually. - Make offers a free tier with 1,000 monthly credits, followed by Core at $9 a month with 10,000 credits. Make's pricing page does not say whether that price assumes annual billing. - Zapier starts at $19.99 monthly on an annual contract for 750 tasks, with team tiers starting at $69 per month.

The only published figures on automation agency pricing come from vendors and agencies with a commercial interest. Self-published data from Aumiqx across 48 agencies reports a median charge of roughly $1,000 for single-workflow builds and $3,556 for multi-workflow setups. Treat this self-published dataset as weak sourcing.

YouTube Channels and Clipping Campaigns

A YouTube channel earns ad revenue only after it clears YouTube's Partner Program thresholds and its inauthentic-content policy. If you are exploring video, see our walkthrough on running a faceless YouTube channel with AI.

To earn ad revenue on YouTube, your channel must cross 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views over 90 days. YouTube pays creators 55% of revenue on long-form video views and 45% from pooled Shorts ads. YouTube's inauthentic content policy does not monetize generic AI videos made from mass-production templates or slideshows with little or no commentary. It also bars AI personas presenting as experts on health, legal or financial topics.

Short-form clipping campaigns provide faster monetization without channel partner thresholds. On Whop, brands launch Content Rewards campaigns for clippers on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. For more details, explore our guide on Whop clipping. Each brand sets its own rate per 1,000 views, a total budget and a per-video cap, and pays only for posts it approves. Whop's 10% Content Reward Fee is paid by the brand, so it does not come out of a clipper's payout.

Digital Products, Books, Art, and Music

Selling AI-generated books, art and music means following each platform's disclosure rules and accepting copyright limits. Amazon KDP requires authors to disclose AI-generated text, art, or translations during publication. AI-assisted content, such as your own writing refined with AI, does not need disclosure on KDP. Etsy's Creativity Standards say AI-generated items made from a seller's own prompts belong in the "designed by" category, that sellers must disclose AI use, and that selling AI prompt bundles is prohibited.

Audio generation tools restrict commercial ownership by account tier. According to Suno's help center, users retain commercial ownership only for tracks created while subscribed to Pro or Premier tiers. Songs produced on free tiers remain non-commercial assets, and subsequent paid upgrades do not grant retroactive commercial rights.

Federal copyright law limits ownership of AI media. The U.S. Copyright Office established that purely AI-generated text or images lack human authorship and cannot receive copyright protection. Because purely AI-generated material is not copyrightable, a pure-AI product can be copied.

Tools and What They Cost

Running an AI side hustle incurs subscription overhead. Anthropic offers Claude Free, a Pro plan at $20 monthly, and Max plans starting at $100 per month. Claude Pro includes Claude Code. Explore our guide on how to make money with Claude to see compliant ways to monetize workflows.

OpenAI provides ChatGPT Free, Go at $8 per month, Plus at $20 per month, and Pro tiers starting at $100 monthly. Read our walkthrough on how to make money with ChatGPT for practical business applications.

Anthropic's consumer terms and OpenAI's terms of use both assign you their rights in the output, and Anthropic's terms contain no general ban on commercial use. Neither company runs an open revenue-share program for consumers. An FAQ quoted on OpenAI's community forum says GPT Store payouts were tested with a small group of U.S. builders and new builders were not being accepted, so do not build a GPT expecting payouts.

Red Flags and E-Commerce Store Scams

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has sued several sellers of AI-powered business opportunities over earnings claims it says were false. Its Operation AI Comply sweep, announced in September 2024, covered five actions at once.

The FTC's complaints allege large losses: - Ascend Ecom allegedly cost consumers at least $25 million by promising AI-powered stores with "five-figure monthly income by the second year." A proposed order would permanently ban its owners from selling business opportunities. - FBA Machine allegedly cost consumers more than $15.9 million with "7-figure business" claims, and a proposed order carries a $15.7 million judgment, partially suspended. - Click Profit allegedly cost consumers at least $14 million selling "passive income" stores on Amazon, Walmart and TikTok, and the FTC says about 95% of those stores were blocked, suspended or terminated by Amazon. - Air AI was sued in August 2025 over claims that buyers would earn back "tens of thousands of dollars in a matter of days or months."

Under the FTC's Business Opportunity Rule (16 CFR Part 437), a seller who makes an earnings claim must have written substantiation and give buyers an earnings claim statement showing the number and percentage of buyers who reached those earnings. Treat any promoter selling turnkey automated stores or guaranteed daily returns as a scam, and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Tax Rules for AI Side Income

Income from AI contract work, freelancing, or digital sales is treated as taxable self-employment income by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Once your net self-employment earnings reach $400 in a calendar year, you are required to pay federal self-employment tax along with your standard income tax.

Handshake AI hires fellows as 1099 independent contractors. When receiving payments via PayPal or Stripe, keep detailed records of your earnings and expenses throughout the year.

Use our self-employment tax calculator to estimate your federal tax obligations. Contractors completing labeling work should reference our guide on DataAnnotation taxes to calculate quarterly payments.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI actually make you money?

Yes, but primarily by doing paid hourly or project work using AI tools. High-demand routes include data annotation contracts, technical freelancing, and building software automations. Pitches for passive AI income match the claims the FTC has sued over in its AI business-opportunity cases.

Which AI tool is best for earning money?

The paid task matters more than the tool. Anthropic's and OpenAI's terms both assign you their rights in what Claude and ChatGPT produce. For automation agencies, platforms like n8n, Make, and Zapier handle business workflows.

Can I make $1,000 a day using AI?

There is no credible evidence supporting turnkey systems that yield $1,000 per day. The FTC has sued sellers such as Ascend Ecom and Click Profit over passive-income claims, alleging consumer losses of at least $25 million and $14 million.

How can I train AI and earn money?

You can apply as an independent contractor on data annotation platforms like DataAnnotation, Mindrift, Alignerr, or Handshake AI. After passing a screening assessment, contractors evaluate model responses, flag factual errors, and review code.

Can I make money with AI with no experience?

Prolific requires researchers to pay study participants at least $8 an hour. While Mindrift lists entry-level projects at $15 to $30 per hour, platforms like DataAnnotation generally seek candidates with bachelor's degrees or equivalent professional backgrounds.

Is AI passive income real?

True passive income with AI is largely a myth. Generating ad revenue on YouTube, selling digital assets, or licensing music requires ongoing human creative direction, manual editing, compliance tracking, and platform maintenance.
